After updating to Windows 10, many of you end up with the Windows 10 taskbar frozen! It is therefore impossible to use the Start button, the Cortana search bar, the notification area, windows 10 start menu and the various buttons on the taskbar … Fortunately, two solutions have been found to correct this problem!

Method 1: Repair the Windows 10 System Files

Before embarking on more complex methods, we will use internal Windows tools to check and repair any errors on the system.

Many users have found a functional taskbar and start menu after using these two tools: repairing system files and repairing the Windows 10 image

1. Repairing Windows 10 System Files to restore the frozen taskbar and start menu

We will first use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or damaged system files.

Press CTRL + ALT + DEL on your keyboard simultaneously to open the Windows Security dialog box and select Task Manager.

Click File> Run New Task.

Enter cmd, select the Create this task with administrative privileges check box, and then click OK.

In the command prompt, enter sfc / scannow and then enter.

Once the verification is complete, restart your PC. In the screenshot below, we can see that the tool has detected and repaired damaged files, it’s pretty good

If the taskbar still does not work, go to the next step: repairing the Windows 10 image.

2. Repairing the image of Windows 10 using the DISM too

The Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool is used to repair the Windows 10 image. To use it, run the command prompt as admin as we did previously and enter the following command:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth


Repairing the Windows 10 image done, restart your PC.

If the Start menu still does not work, try the following method: with a PowerShell script!

Method 2: Creating a new administrator account

In this second method, we will create a new user – administrator. Windows will generate a new workspace for this new user, which will allow the taskbar and the Start menu to unlock and run again.

To do this, open the task manager: press the CTRL + ALT + DEL keys simultaneously and select Task Manager.

Click File> Run New Task.

Enter cmd, select the Create this task with administrative privileges check box, and then click OK.

We will now create a new administrator “twasha” with the password “password“. To do this, in the command prompt, enter the following commands:

net user twasha password/add
net localgroup Administrators twasha/add

We will now login to Windows with this new administrator account. To do this, disconnect from your current session: on the desktop (+ D keys), simultaneously press the ALT + F4 keys, select Disconnect from the drop-down menu and click OK. and connect with the new user (twasha)

Now check that the taskbar is working properly and then follow the following instructions depending on the situation you are facing:

  • The taskbar works: Log out of the “twasha” account, log back into your usual user account and test the taskbar again.
    If it works, all you have to do is enjoy Windows 10 (you can delete the “twasha” account from the Control Panel> User Accounts> Manage another account)!
    If the taskbar does not work on your usual user account, the solution I propose is to migrate the data from your usual user account to the new administrator account we just created: from File Explorer, go to you in this PC> Users. Open the directory of your current user account and copy all your files and folders; then paste them into the directory of the new administrator account.
  • The taskbar still does not work: reapply Method 1: with a PowerShell script on the new administrator account we created (do not forget to start the Windows Firewall service if already stopped!).
