two solutions to resolve the temporary profile problem with windows 7, 8 and 10

Here are tips for advanced Windows users. These solve a problem that occurs with a user account on the computer. It is loaded as a temporary profile after login. The problem has already been observed on Windows Vista, but especially on Windows 7 and sometimes on Windows 10.

The problem of the temporary profile can arise especially when a computer administrator renames the folder of a user account (C:\Users\Username) to recreate a new account (for example when the old account had a problem).

When you open the new account session, a Windows message appears with a text that looks like this (or the one on the introductory image to this article):

“Your user profile was not loaded correctly! Your session has been opened with a temporary profile.

Changes made to this profile will be lost when you log out. Check the event log for more information or contact your administrator. “

 

WHAT IS HAPPENING ?

The temporary account (or profile) is created each time the user’s session is opened. Any changes made in the profile are never saved. The problem comes from a backup of the old account in the Windows registry.

IMPORTANT : before proceeding with solutions 2 and 3 proposed below, I strongly encourage you to make a complete backup of your problematic user account so as not to lose your important data (photos, documents and others).

From the temporary profile or another computer administrator account, go to the ” C:\Users ” or ” C:\Users ” folder in Windows Explorer and copy the folder for your usual user account ( example C:\Users\lucas) to an external hard disk or other folder on your computer (for example in a folder named “C:\BackUP”).

 

SOLUTION 1

I believe that this solution can be the simplest to execute and the least risky, which is why I propose it to you first. You will not have to modify the Windows registry here unless you want to do some cleaning in it by removing the registry keys mentioned in solution 2 (keys to the temporary profile folder) ).

Note: this solution has a significant disadvantage; it will inevitably be necessary to configure again all your software and applications like the preferences of your Web browser or your accounts of emails. If you do not want to lose the preferences of your current user account, go to solution 2 or 3.

From the current Windows temporary profile or another computer administrator account, create a new “local” user account that will also be an administrator. You can follow the steps explained by Microsoft for Windows 10 and for Windows 7 or 8.1 . The new user account must not have the same name as the old account that is in trouble.

When the new user account is created, log out of the temporary profile and log back in to the new user account that should be displayed on the Windows lock screen. Then open Windows Explorer and copy the data from your old user account folder (example C: \ Users \ Dominic) to your new account. For example, you can copy the data from the “C:\Users\username\Documents” folder to the “My Documents” folder of the new account.

When this step is completed, go to the Windows user account management (see links above) and check if the old user account is still there. If so, delete it.

 

SOLUTION 2

This time, it will be necessary to modify the registry of Windows by deleting a key ending with “.bak”. We will try to recover the usual user account so that it no longer opens as a temporary profile:

  1. Open a Windows session with a valid and functional administrator account (this can also work from the temporary profile)
  2. Open the Windows Registry Editor (go to the Start menu , click Run , then type the term Regedit , if you are using Windows 10, simply look for the term in the Cortana search tool on the taskbar).
  3. Search for the following key ( Edit and Find menu ): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
  4. Find and delete a key beginning with ” S-1-5 ” and ending with ” .bak ” (example: S-1-5-21-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXxXXXX.bak)
  5. Restart the computer and try to reopen the user account that was in trouble
Warning : there will be a key without “.bak” at the end and another with a “.bak”. Delete only the one ending with the “.bak” and restart the computer.
